June 28, 2002, Newsletter Issue #22: Treatment of Hypoglycemia

Tip of the Week

If you have diabetes, check with your doctor about treating hypoglycemia in your case. In general, treat a hypoglycemic reaction immediately with 15 grams of a fast-acting carbohydrate source. This source should not contain fat, since that delays absorption. Easy to find sources are 1/2 cup orange juice or regular soda, 1 cup skim milk, or 1 T honey. Carry glucose tablets or hard candy with you.
