Q: If you drink a relatively small amount of alcohol, will the doctors be able to detect it in your blood when you go for a Hemoglobin A1C testing?
Answer(s) to this Question (
1 / 1
)
Will my A1C show that I drank some alcohol?
Hemoglobin A1C is a test that essentially reflects your blood sugars over a period of time - usually 3-6 months. This test is used to determine your blood glucose control. It is desireable to have an A1C of less than 6.0.
Food intake, including alcohol, will effect your blood glucose for the day it is consumed. Unless you consistently do not follow your food plan, or consume alcohol - artificially elevating your daily blood glucose - your A1C is not generally effected.
Remember:
1. For best glucose control, you must count
alcohol carbs into your daily total.
2. Alcohol use contributes to dehydration,
which can impact your blood sugars and
your kidney function.
3. Alcohol gets broken down into simple
sugars, which can give you blood sugar
spikes with the associated symptoms.
Talk to you doctor about the impact of alcohol on your diabetes.
