What Causes High Blood Sugar?
There are several things that can contribute to high blood sugars. Some of these factors can also make it difficult to control your blood sugars, including:
* Medications - Prednisone is a classic example of a medication that can increase your blood sugar.
* Infection - acute or chronic underlying infections can elevate your blood sugars.
* Body chemistry changes and insulin resistance - your body can become progressively resistant to insulin, resulting in high blood sugars.
* Diet - diet is usually the number one cause of elevated blood sugars.
* Other medical condition - kidney or liver disease impact your blood sugars due to their role in processing sugars and producing glycogen.
So, what can you do about this?
1. Review your medications with your doctor. Look at any new medications or changes in dosage or administration time.
2. Get a complete physical, including lab work. You may have an underlying infection that is making your blood sugars high.
3. Track your blood sugars and anti-diabetic medication dosages. Talk to your doctor about your sugars, how you are taking your medications and what changes you may need to make, to get them under control.
4. Look at your diet. Keep a food diary to track your intake and look for "trouble" spots where you may be inadvertantly adding carbs, that can increase your sugars.
5. When you get your physical, have your doctor check your kidney and liver function, as well as your pancreas. Disease in other organs that participate in blood sugar management can impact your sugars and make them difficult to control.
