February 1, 2002, Newsletter Issue #1: Types of monitoring

Tip of the Week

There are several tests that should be done regularly for the person with diabetes, to monitor their health and control of the disease. These tests include:

*blood glucose monitoring: frequency will vary with the individual based on their health teamīs recommendations

*ketone monitoring: this is done by people with type 1 diabetes when their glucoses are elevated or they are ill, undergoing surgery, or severe stress.

*hemoglobin a1c: this test should be done regularly (every three months to every six months depending on the person), to check on overall blood glucose control

*microalbumin: this test is done to check for kidney damage due to diabetes, and should be done annually

*Lipid levels: these should also be checked regularly, since they may be elevated in diabetes. Dietary and possibly medication may be used as interventions to help control them.

These are a few of the regular tests that a person with diabetes should have done.
